Nothing gets you into the holiday mood like some shopping. But don’t head to the mall yet - Medicine Hat has plenty to offer if you’re on the hunt for a one-of-a-kind gift for a special person. Whether it’s strolling a Christmas market or bringing everyone to see the Ballet, start your holiday season off right with these events: 

Midnight Madness 2018

If you have some holiday shopping to do, this is the place to be. On Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 downtown Medicine Hat becomes a presents paradise with over 100 businesses participating in “Midnight Madness” and offering exclusive sales throughout the night. In addition to crossing things off your shopping list, there will be family fun activities such as a free movie at 7pm and hayrides from 6 to 9pm. The night commences with an opening ceremony and tree lighting to get everyone into the holiday spirit! The Nutcracker Ballet

A timeless holiday tale to start the season. On December 1 and 2, the Jeunesse Classique Ballet will perform Tchaikovsky’s classic fairytale The Nutcracker. Bring the kids to experience their first ballet production or revel in the nostalgia of the ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ with the family. Only here for one weekend, you can catch the show at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre at 7pm or 2pm. Buy your Nutcracker ballet tickets in advance to avoid disappointment!  

Enerplus Olde Tyme Christmas Fair and Market 

Transport yourself to a different time. On Thursday, December 6, 2018 the Enerplus Olde Tyme Christmas Fair will run from 5 to 8pm in the historic Pioneer Village. Take a photo with Santa (don’t worry he has plenty of time to return to the North Pole), sip on hot chocolate, roast s’mores over an open fire, and explore historic buildings such as a blacksmith shop, fire hall, St. James Church, Austin’s General Store and a replica RCMP detachment. If you need a break from the cold, next door at the Cypress Centre Auditorium there will be Christmas Farmers’ market running from 4 to 9pm. It’s the perfect time to pick up some handcrafted unique gifts you won’t find anywhere else! This event is free and even has a colouring contest for the kids.

Heritage Christmas Market

If you couldn’t make any of the earlier Christmas markets, this is your chance. Medalta’s 18th Annual Heritage Christmas market will be held Dec. 7 and 8 and is one of the city’s most anticipated winter art and crafts markets. Give the gifts that support local print, portrait, ceramic, fibre arts, or glass artists. In addition to finding that one-of-a-kind gift, during the market Medalta’s museum is also free to visit and a perfect opportunity to explore the National Historic Site and Industrial Museum. Check times before you head out on the Friday or Saturday.
