Practically everyone makes chilli and everyone who makes chilli thinks that their recipe is the best around. This is almost certainly how chilli competitions got started. That said, no matter how these events got their start there’s nothing quite like a good old-fashioned chilli cook-off. If you love chilli (and salsa) and you love competition, be sure to be downtown on July 21 for the 29th annual CCDA Downtown Chili Cook-Off.

The event is hosted each year as a kind of kick-off to Stampede week. If you plan on taking part in the tasting, be sure to arrive early. Chilli is served from 12 pm onward. Once the chilli runs out, the sampling is over. The event is an amazing deal, so be sure to bring your appetite. For only $5 you get a bowl, a spoon and access to as much chilli as you can fit in your stomach (until the pots run dry). You won’t find a better lunch deal than that.

Those who’d rather participate in the cook-off need to have their entry forms in by July 11. This year all of the chilli preparation and cooking will be done offsite. Competitors may enter as individuals or as teams. The entry fee is $45 per category (traditional, hot & spicy, salsa).

Participants may enter multiple categories, but the fee will apply to each one. Category winners will be announced and ribbons will be given out at 1 pm on the day of the event. The Personal Choice winner will be determined and announced at around 2 pm.
